Educators and researchers from around the globe converged at Meijo University Dome Mae Campus in Nagoya, Japan, from May 17 to May 19, 2024, for the JALT CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) Conference. This year’s theme, “The Impact of AI in Language Education,” drew enthusiastic participation as experts delved into the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in teaching languages.
Keynote speakers Takako Aikawa and Joel Tetreault set the tone for the conference, delivering insightful addresses on AI’s evolving role in enhancing language acquisition and communication skills. Aikawa, known for her groundbreaking research in educational technology, delved into the possibilities of employing generative AI in language education, highlighting how the roles and duties of language instructors are changing over time. Tetreault, VP of Research at Dataminr, in natural language processing, discussed Large Language Models (LLMs), its foundational aspects and its influence on the language learning applications.
Dr. Roberto Figueroa, the director of IOP, presented a poster and convened a forum on immersive learning techniques using H5P and 3D Vista. Their session sparked lively discussions among attendees, highlighting practical applications of virtual reality and interactive content creation tools in language education. Furthermore, it promoted UPOU’s contribution to the field of immersive learning.
The conference featured presentations, workshops, and panel discussions covering topics such as AI-driven language assessment, virtual classrooms, and adaptive learning platforms. Participants exchanged ideas on best practices and shared empirical research on the efficacy of AI tools in different educational contexts.
In addition to academic sessions, the conference also facilitated networking opportunities and collaborations among educators, technology developers, and policymakers. Participants explored partnerships to innovate further and integrate AI solutions into mainstream language education curricula.
As the JALT CALL 2024 conference drew to a close, participants were left inspired by the possibilities AI holds for the future of language education. The commitment to harnessing technology responsibly and inclusively resonated throughout the conference, promising continued advancements in educational practices worldwide.
