Dr. Roberto Figueroa, Director of Immersive Open Pedagogies (IOP), presented updates regarding his study titled “Exploring the Integration of Virtual Reality Photo-Based Tours in Emergency Remote Teaching: A Case Study in a Japanese Filipino Language Class” on November 25, at the 49th Annual International Conference on Language Teaching and Learning & Educational Materials Exhibition held at Tsukuba International Congress Center in Ibaraki, Japan.

This event, facilitated by The Japan Association of Language Teaching (JALT), aims  to advance the standard of language education by providing a platform for participants to gather, exchange insights, engage, and collaborate. The specific forum where he presented his paper was organized by Mixed, Augmented, and Virtual Realities in Learning Special Interest Group (MAVR, SIG).

Dr. Figueroa’s study explored the impact of Japan’s COVID-19 State of Emergency on education and how emergency remote teaching was employed, focusing on a case where Filipino vocabulary was taught to Japanese students studying Philippine Studies using virtual reality (VR). The study highlighted how multisensory technologies can enhance remote learning by not only addressing spatial limitations but also enriching both emotional and cognitive aspects of learning experiences. Dr. Figueroa also served as one of the convenors and facilitators of the forum.
